Professor Philip Garcia holds the Thomas A. Hieronymus Distinguished Chair in Futures Markets in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He has been the Director of the Office for Futures and Options Research since 2002.  Dr. Garcia has an outstanding research record with 8 book chapters and 64 referred journal articles, in addition to numerous reports, abstracts and proceeding publications.  His research program focuses on the assessment of economic problems in the agricultural sector.  He has addressed fundamental economic questions such as firm allocative efficiency, factors influencing producer and market behavior, market performance, and the impact of technology on markets.  Current research examines issues related to market and price behavior and risk measurement and its management.  Specific topics include futures market behavior and performance, basis relationships, the value of information, and the identification of optimal and robust marketing strategies.  Dr. Garcia received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University and has been a visiting professor at Autonomous University in Madrid, Spain.  He teaches courses in agricultural marketing, agricultural price analysis and forecasting, futures markets and research methodology.  He frequently is invited to teach a course on commodity market modeling at the Mediterrean Agronomic Institute in Zaragoza, Spain.  Dr. Garcia has served as associate editor of two journals and is currently on the editorial board of The Journal of Futures Markets.  He has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1997 Paul A. Funk Award in the College of Agriculture, and the Outstanding Departmental Graduate Professor Award in 1991 and 2000.  Dr. Garcia has been on the list of Outstanding Teachers numerous times, and directed the most outstanding departmental Ph.D. thesis four times.
